Abstract

The need to conserve forestry resources is increasingly becoming a topical issue in most countries of the world. InNigeria the government and rural communities in the control and exploitation offorest resources use several measures. This study assessed the effectiveness of these measures inforestry management. The study was conducted in Ugwuoba(Enugu State) and Ndiukwuenu (Anambra State). A sample size of 100 respondents was usedfor the study. Data werecollected with a structured interview schedule and were analysed using percentages and rating score. Results of thestudy show that some of the regulatory measures were perceived to be effective and many traditional measures wereperceived to be more effective than the government measures. The study therefore, advocates institutional networking, acollaborative approach toforestry control and exploitation. By this approach, important local/inargenous measures areidentified andbuilt into government measuresfor maximum result. Extension agents canfacilitate this process throughcommunity mobilizationfor social actionprocess.
