Abstract

The study investigated the perceived effectiveness of Community and Social Development Projects by benefiting communities in Plateau State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted to select 150 respondents. Questionnaire and interview schedule were utilized for data collection, while percentage, mean and Logit regression were used for data analysis. The results revealed that the donation of educational facilities (x? =2.17), water infrastructure (x? =2.20), facilities for healthcare (x? =2.28) and motorable roads (x? =2.19) were perceived to be effective activities of CSDP by the respondents in the area of study. The results further showed that factors such as age (0.0337), sex (0.0681), education (-0.0358), farm size (-0.0606), household size (0.0369) and experience (-0.0772) showed significant relationships with participation in CSDP. The study additionally identified poor mobilization (84.0%), time consumption (80.0%) and poor funding (78.7%) as the key challenges encountered by the respondents in accessing CSDP in the study area. Consequently, CSDP and other relevant government agencies should mobilize communities more effectively and increase participation in community development projects, particularly among non-benefitting communities, in order to improve agricultural productivity and food security.
