Abstract

This study examined the consumption patterns of local beverages amongst rural dwellers in Osun State, Nigeria, and explores the implications for food security. A cross-sectional survey of 205 rural dwellers was conducted, using a structured questionnaire to collect relevant data on local beverage consumption patterns and their perceived effects on food security. Percentage and correlation analysis were used to analyse the data. Results showed that all respondents consumed local beverages at least once a week, while the most consumed local beverages were zobo (72%), soy milk (64%), and palm wine (63.4%). Palm wine was the most used for ceremonies such as housewarming (72.3%), burial (66.0%), and naming (63.6%). Also, results revealed that significant relationship exists between local beverage consumption and its perceived effect on food security, implying that rural dwellers who consumed local beverages regularly are more likely to be food-secured. Government agencies, NGOs, and development stakeholders should promote local beverages in rural food systems by providing targeted production support, enhancing safety, and implementing capacity-building initiatives. Additionally, public awareness campaigns should be implemented to educate rural dwellers on the nutritional benefits of these beverages, thereby encouraging consistent consumption.
